It was a mere fortnight later that Lord Royson, before a small group of friends and loved ones, wed Lady Sofia. The short notice did not allow for an extravagant celebration, but because he was still of little of means and most beholden to the king he could ill afford to throw a large party.

Still both the King and his Queen attended. This of course did not go unnoticed by the other nobles in attendance.
The Britons, there noses forever in the air or in a brown orifice, thought it lucky for him to have the King attend at all, as his Lordly status is so recent. They didn’t take into account the long-standing friendship Lewen and Dimitri have nor the family ties of Lady Maryann Donovan being Sofia’s own sister and now aunt to the Queen.
In any case, no one paid the couple a bit of mind and barely noticed when they slipped off early, only taking note that Lady Briton looked as thin as ever even after having just given birth to a son. A comment was whispered about too tight stays but the couple was quickly forgotten.

Lady Royson was quite flattered when the King and Queen wished her well on her marriage. King Dimitri welcomed her warmly to the family and insisted they be on a first name basis. He also invited her to attend them at court after their honeymoon was over. She of course accepted and thanked him for the generous offer.

Queen Alexia pulled Sofia to the side as they made their way back into the parlor. She inquired as to the lady’s health and asked her if she was happy. Smiling, Sofia nodded and assured the Queen she was well and quite happily married to a man she loved. Alexia couldn’t help but notice a sad look come into the woman’s eyes and made a note to speak to her husband about his friend.
“Lady Royson, the Queen smiled when Sofia flushed at her new title, “I would like you to come serve me as Lady in waiting when you and your husband have settled your household and are over your honeymoon.”
Sofia nodded slowly. “Serving you would be an honor my Queen.” Her husbands status had changed drastically and she knew it would be most beneficial to get to know her new Queen/niece.
“And please, call me Sofia. We are family after all.”
Alexia laughed softly, “Yes, we are aren’t we?” Taking her hand in hers she gave it a brief squeeze. “You shall call me Alexia, or Lexi, when in private. And I’ll call you Aunt Sofie.”
Both ladies giggled at that for Alexia was nearly four years older than Sofia.

They were interrupted by others wanting to wish the new bride well. Maryann, pulled her sister into a fierce hug, kissing her several times and patting her hair.
“Oh, Sofie! We’re free!” She whispered low in her sisters ear.
Pulling away slightly she looked her sister in the eye and smiled widely. “You must make peace with father. Mother asked me to and I have. She says things will change now. I believe her.”
Sofia nodded and looked around. She didn’t see her mother, although she knew she was in attendance. Was she avoiding her?
“Ann, do you… are you… happy?” Sofia asked her hesitantly, having caught sight of Lord Donovan from the corner of her eye.
Maryann, smiled and Sofia thought it was like a light had gone off inside her.
“Oh yes, “she whispered fervently, “He is a wonderful husband. So kind and understanding. He allows me my freedom and isn’t at all demanding. We are good company for each other.” She stopped suddenly, her face flushing.
She leaned in closer. “I…I am going to have a baby Sofie!”
Sofia’s eyes widened and she looked over at the elderly Lord Donovan. “Indeed?!” she couldn’t imagine how…
A speculating look came into her eyes and her grip tightened on her sisters hands. “When Ann?” she asked, her eyes worried. “When is the baby to come?”
Maryann flushed and stepped back. “Go, see father. Please?”

Sofia opened her mouth to respond but suddenly she was engulfed in a big hug.
“Ah, my Sofia. My flower. The light of my life. How I will miss you!” Lord Montague snuffled into his daughters hair, squeezing her so tight she feared she’d pop.
Fa..Father. Are you well?” She pulled back to look at him in astonishment.
His nose was red as were his eyes, which to her surprise; seemed to be wet with tears.
“Ah, my dear. It’s just an old man feeling his age.” He sighed and caressed her hair, his stare intense.
“I… I have made some mistakes in my life. There are things I regret and, well I always wanted a son..”
He looked away a fierce frown on his face.
Sofia shook her head and looked around for her mother. It was obvious her father had been drinking.
“Father, why don’t you sit and have a game of chance. You love to play cards don’t you?” She ushered him to a chair and left him to his game.
She wondered where his sudden moodiness had come from and attested it to age.

It was several hours later, and the servants were ushering out the last guest when her husband approached.
Standing quickly she waited for him to say something, surprised when he took her hand.
“My Lady Royson,” he caressed her fingertips with his own before bringing her hand to his lips.
“How beautiful you look. Like the choicest rose upon the bush. But beware to those who would come near, for this rose has thorns.” His fingers tightened on hers when she would pull her hand away.
“You are drunk.” Sofia whispered angrily, glancing around to be sure no servants watched. The room was thankfully empty.
“Perhaps, but you are a manipulative whore, which cannot be remedied after a mere nights sleep.” His sneering words turned her cold and she successfully pulled her hand out of his and left the room.

He was right behind her and she watched as he stalked into the room, slamming the door behind him.
Backing slowly into a corner she shook her head as he came near.
“If you think to have me while you reek of spirits…”
“Ha!, he scoffed loudly, going around her to rummage through a trunk at the foot of the bed.
“I think we’ve had our ‘wedding night’ several times over now my lady” he sneered that last word.
She watched silently as he changed from his wedding frock to a rough tunic and leggings.
“Where are you going?” she finally mustered up the courage to ask.
He looked her way, his eyes roving over her form in the white and cream wedding dress.
“Let’s get something straight right now.” He said, stepping toward her. “You are my wife, my chattel if you will. You do what I say, you go where I say, You are mine to do with as I please. I do not answer to you.”
He raised a hand to brush it over her breast, his fingers skimming up to brush her neck.
Slowly his hand closed around her neck and he pulled her to him, his lips taking hers in a deeply possessive kiss.
Pulling away from her he laughed softly seeing her flushed face, eyes shining with desire.
“I…you..” her lashes lowered, hiding her eyes from him as he pulled away from her.
“Stay warm for me Lady, I intend to get my full moneys worth upon my return.”

She watched him walk away, her heart thumping wildly in her chest, her face a burning mask of shame. Turning she looked around, her thoughts in chaos.
It was her mothers marriage, she had vowed to avoid. And now it seemed she was stuck in her very own version.
Whimpering softly she wrung her hands a moment before straightening her shoulders. She wouldn’t let this deter her. She was free of the evils of her fathers household. She would make things better. She would do whatever she could to make it right.
Putting her face in her hands she gave a soft whimper. But it wasn’t right.
Her husband thought her a manipulative bitch. He’d called her a whore.
She finally gave vent to the tears she’d been holding in for so long.
She wished so much that she could be strong and stoic in the face of her husbands hatred, like her mother. Not caring. But the problem was, she loved her husband. And she knew deep inside he loved her. She’d felt that love all summer. Though he tried to deny it, she knew it was there. Now it seemed she would never have it again.
The servants, hearing there mistresses tears, steered clear of the master suite. The new Lady Royson wept into the wee hours of the night finally sleeping amid her tear soaked pillows. Alone.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

In the Montague’s dark chapel, Lady Montague met with her manservant.
“Have you what I requested?” She asked, her voice cold.
“Aye mi’lady, twas na easy gettin it.” he rapsed handing her a small vial.
She quickly took the vial, inspecting the contents before slipping it up her sleeve.
“And the servants? Have they all been dismissed?” she asked.
“Yesm’.” he nodded watching her warily.
“Good, she stood and turned to him. “I would hate for any harm to come to you. I trust you will be discreet?”
“Oh…yes mi’lady.” It’s like I never was even here.
Nodding she waked to the door. “You can see yourself out.”
The servant waited a moment before exiting. The manor was eerily quiet. Going to the front door, he paused before heading in the opposite direction. The backdoor leading from the kitchens, was unlocked and he left himself out. Not looking back.

Lady Montague stood over her husbands bed. She thought back to the last month’s activities. She’d met with the priest at the tavern this week. He’d been new to the parish and she was grateful for that.
It was always a comfort to her, the church. That is until she was married. At one point she had wanted to join the church. But of course the old King would have none of that. After her father had died in the war, the King had take her, his most loyal Lords daughter into his household as his “ward”.
She nearly laughed out loud at that. The king was a lecher. He’d cheated on his wife at every opportunity. It had been a miracle she’d had any children at all, he’d so rarely spent his time with her.
Instead he’d been tupping his ward daily for months before Lord Montague’s heroism had come tyo his attention.
She’d been happy at first to have the hand of such an attentive knight. So glad to be rid of the overweight and smelly king.
She’d traded one hell for another.

Seeing the preist had been her way of making amends for her past misdeeds. She wanted to confess, but there was nothing she felt that warranted it. She’d been a good wife and Lady to her husbands home and lands. He’d been a brute and a beast. Beating her, raping her, threatening thel ives of her daughters. It was his evil deeds that had caused her to miscarry her babies.
She felt vengeance for him in her heart. She knew it was a sin. Vengeance is to be left to God. But she knew that without action, works would be dead. So she must take action so that Gods work would be done. She asked the priest if this was right. Asked him if taking action to do Gods work was wrong. When he told her it was what is required of us all, she knew than that what she had planned was right.

Leaning over her husband she placed the vial on the pillow near his head, waiting.
The small black spider ambled slowly out of the glass. It’s bright red back a warning beacon. Blowing a light breath she encouraged it out and watched as it scampered across the pillow to the warm flesh it had been denied for so long.

Turning she laced the vial down and glanced back seeing her husband watching her curiously.
“What are you doing up?” he asked suspiciously looking around.
She turned back to the small table and shrugged.
“I was looking for my medicine.” she said lifting the small vial to show him it’s emptiness.

He scanned the room with his eyes, stifling a yawn. Grunting softly he stretched his neck out and started to rise.
Quickly turning to him she asked. “Do you need something husband?”
He paused, the blanket still around his waist.
“Why are you acting so strangely?” he cast his eyes toward the door.
“I am not, I only want to please you.” she said sweetly moving away to put the vial back on the table.
Sighing he settled back down, his head pressing deeply into the pillow.
Lady Montague smiled and waited expectantly.
A moment more and she heard a strangled grunt as her husband stiffened in the bed.
“Ah gods…” she heard him whisper softly before he shuddered and than was still.

The carriage rattled out the drive and was hidden deep in the forest when the first bright orange flames brightened the horizon.
By the time the countryside was alerted to the blazing inferno of the Montague manor, the Lady had returned in her carriage a dark cloak draped around her as she watched her home go up in flames.
No one made mention of where the lady was when the blaze had started. They only noted the cold look in her eyes and the small eery smile she had when the roof collapsed.
She finally had her freedom.
She was a widow.
Like the spider she’d left upon her husbands pillow.

A door slammed with a bang and footsteps could be heard clattering down the stairs.
Lord and Lady Montague looked up as their eldest daughter Sofia came panting into the room.
“Sofia, it is not ladylike to go running around the manor.” Lady Montague gently scolded.

Halting suddenly she dropped into a polite curtsy and addressed her father. “Milord, you’re meeting with Lord Royson is ended. I would like to pay my respects… where is he?”
Her dark eyes, so like his own pierced his and Lord Montague felt himself flush in anger at her boldness and lack of respect.
Seeing her husbands raising ire, Lady Montague spoke quickly. “Why, Lord Royson is staying until the morning. You and he will be leaving together then. I believe right now he is taking a walk near the lake. He says he enjoys the water.” She glanced sideways at her husband, who was glaring angrily at her.

Without another word she turned and ran out the door again her feet again clamoring noisily on the stairs.

Rushing out onto her balcony she scanned the horizon and sighed in relief not to see any signs of a departing guest.

Peering through the trees she thought she spied a bit of color near the waters edge and gave a relieved smile at seeing it was indeed Lewen skimming rocks along the water. She hesitated at first, not sure if she should go to him but then her fathers words came back to her and she knew she had to set things right between them. She would die before she ended up in a loveless and bitter marriage like that of her parents.

Barely slowing on the steps she made sure to walk sedately past the drawing room, so as not to gain her mothers disapproval once again. Seeing the couple absent from the room she again lifted her skirts and dashed through the door on her way to the lake and the sulky man moping there.

Lewen watched the splash and ripple of the water as he tossed the rock in. It sank instantly not skipping once. His concentration was off. He could feel her watching him. He turned his head away and smirked slightly. The little minx. She was out for marriage all along he had no doubt. He was certain she’d sought diligently to escape her abusive and overbearing father in any way she could. He just happened to be the means to an end.
He smiled wryly. A willing means.

“Lewen?” Sofia whispered his name softly her eyes filled with anxiety. Turning to her he couldn’t help but soften a little at her fearful demeanor. No doubt her father enjoyed such looks from his wife, he thought angrily.
Seeing his angry frown she took a step back.
“I, know you think I did this on purpose, but I assure you it was never my intent to trap you into a marriage you didn‘t…” her eyes lowered and her voice trailed off.

Frowning Lewen started to say something but she put her hands up. “No, it’s alright. I know you didn’t want this. I will go to my father and demand that he stop this at once.” Turning she stormed away from him, her eyes intent on the ground before her. She prayed he would not follow her. She didn’t think she could accept his rejection. Not now, when she felt so very vulnerable to the whims of both him and her father.

“Sofia wait.” Lewen called. It had never occurred to him that she might not want this marriage either. Perhaps they could come to some form of aggreement. He would rather not be tied down. And if she truly wanted only to escape her fathers house… He shook his head ruefully. There was still the matter of whether or not she was with child. He just couldn’t see a way out of this. It was the noose for him at last. Turning she stared at him for long moments her eyes searching his face for some kindness, for some understanding of her situation. Finally she shook her head and exclaimed in exasperation
“Wait for what? For it to be too late? Maybe, maybe I can convince him somehow to let this matter be.”

He laughed mockingly taking a few steps in her direction. “How can he let this matter be, when there may be a child involved?”

She gasped and pressed a hand to her flat midsection. “No, there is no child. I never said…” Her eyes closed for a moment in horror. Was there a child? When had her courses come upon her last?

The sun chose that moment to sink behind the clouds, thrusting the countryside into sudden and alarming darkness. Blinking rapidly at the dimmnes she looked away and didn’t notice Lewens approach. She gave a startled cry as he grabbed her and pulled her away from the waters edge. The tips of her slippers, wet with how close she had come to taking a swim slipped on the grass and Lewen hauled her up against him, dragging her out of sight of the manors windows.

The scent of gardenias filled her senses and she glanced around as the moon rose in silvery magnificence. They were on the far side of the lake now and surrounded by bushes and trees. The familiar scent of the flowers bought to mind the first night they had been together and a soft sob escaped her lips.
“What is it?” he asked her quietly his eyes searching for hers in the faint light.

She reached out and grasped his arm lightly in her hand, her fingers skimming the fine fabric of his tunic. “I was just remembering. When we were first here. The first time…” her words trailed off as he brushed her hand away from his arm. A small sarcastic chuckle escaping his lips.

“That was a long time ago. And I was very stupid. Thinking with my cock and all that.” He turned and began walking back towards the manor.
“You should get back inside, it’s getting cold. And we leave at first light, sniffles or not.”
Sofia stood there staring at the bush that so reminded her of how it once was between them. How; she was sure, it would never be again.

So, I have finally finished updating the posts. I condensed them and reordered the pictures. Everything is now nice and neat. I haven’t uploaded chapter 20 yet because I’ve been playing at being modern, waiting for inspiration. I already have the pictures done for the next chapter, which will be the last for this sim year but I haven’t had any brain waves on what to actually write. It’s getting there though.

I have so much going on in my life right now that sim things have taken a back burner. I recently had surgery to have my hateful gallbladder removed. *cheers*

I’m recovered from that now though so I can start working again, which is what I am focusing on now. Also trying to get my children into a different school because there zone school sucks royally. Wish I could get them into charter school but we are on the wait list. I cannot afford private school or they would definitely be going there. Maybe after I get a few of my “money projects” finished.

Anyway, I will post an update as soon as I can. I’m sorry for all the delays.

The summer waned slowly into fall and as the colors on the trees changed so did things in many households. Lady Briton gave birth to her long awaited child. A boy they named Fergus after her grandfather. Lord Briton made no objections to his heir not having his own name and secretly hoped his wife would never find out about the twin girls named after him by their former maid Suzette.
The peasant population has begun increasing as well and has brought new life to New Cornwall. With the coronation of the new king, it seems life in Cornwall is starting afresh.

Lady Montague watched and waited. She wanted to make sure things would fall into place perfectly. She made sure Sofia was under constant supervision by either herself, her manservant or even the cook. Some days she wasn’t well enough to keep watch and it was then these two loyal servants were most needed. Unfortunately she was unwell quite often. She knew it would pass soon enough she only hoped her expanding waistline would not give away her secret. He hadn’t noticed yet and she prayed if all went according to plan he would never know. She couldn’t save her daughters from their fate but she was determined to save this child. Her son. She knew without a doubt this had to be the son that was so longed for. A son she would not share with the miserable lout she called husband.

She recalled the last time she had relations with him. She’d taken to watching Sofia as she slept. Her thoughts troubled by the girls’ actions. Surely she should prefer marriage to a respectable man, one who was in high favor with the king. But instead she took the low road and became his mistress, nothing more then a common whore. Her troubled thoughts had been halted that day when her husband had come home earlier then usual.

It had been her custom to feign deep sleep when he stumbled in at night. He would often try to rouse her but receiving no response he’d eventually give up. But this night he’d seen the door to his daughters’ room open and had decided to check on her, for reasons not even he himself could fathom. Finding his wife there had been a surprise albeit a good one for him. This had been the night, she knew. The night she had conceived her son. She had protested of course but as always he did not listen nor care for her feelings. He’d taken her violently and she’d been in bed for days afterwards, unable to keep a strict watch on her daughter.

The time had finally come. She was with child. Her plan had to be put into action right away. Her husband would, unfortunately, have to be informed of his daughters’ indiscretions. This she dreaded, but knew it had to be done. Her plan would not work without him. She wrote out a note and passed it to her loyal servant to be delivered to Lord Royson. In it she requested he pay a visit in three days. It would take him some time to receive the letter then to make his way to their estate. She was sure by the time he arrived the stage would be set.

She first had her cook set the suspicion in his head. He was rifling around in the kitchen looking for some sweet cakes when she approached. “My Lord, should I set the table for four then?” When he looked confused she almost grinned. He was indeed clueless to the goings on at the castle, just like the Lady had said. Maybe he was the dumb oath she dubbed him. “For Lord Royson sir, I thought I saw his horse down the road. Perhaps he’s come to visit the Lady Sofia…again.”
She waited for this tidbit to sink in. She counted. She got to One hundred before he sputtered something about not knowing if he would stay for dinner before leaving the kitchen. She could hardly contain her mirth as the door slammed shut.

He didn’t approach her right away. He took time to mull things over. It was a full day and a half when he stormed abruptly into their chamber. She quickly turned to hide what she was doing, slipping a small vial under the mattress. Before turning to greet him. Her face paled slightly at the angry look on his face and she took an instinctive step back, her hand covering her belly protectively. “My…my lord. Is everything alright?”

He ground his teeth angrily not knowing where to begin. “I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me my Lady.” He sneered the last word out as his looked her up and down in disgust. Not knowing exactly what he meant she stiffened slightly her hand dropping from her waist. Did he know of the child? Why was he here? She cursed softly to herself. She should have spoken to Hilda the cook this morning.

Feigning indifference she shrugged. “I am sure I don’t know what is bothering you today. Aside from the fact that I breathe…” She looked up startled at her own brazenness. He narrowed his eyes and took a threatening step toward her. “How is it, you know what goes on in this castle down to the last seed being sown, and yet you know nothing of our daughter meeting a man, alone?!” He shouted the last and she flinched slightly.

“Who says I do not know?” she said, her eyes blazing angrily. “I can do nothing to stop her. I haven’t been well.” She took a breath hoping he wouldn’t probe into that subject. “I have tried to speak to her but she keeps her secrets as all girls do. I am not her lord and father. What can I, a lowly woman and your vassal do that you do not command?” She paused when he raised a hand stopping her words.

“You speak as though you have no mind of your own. She is your daughter and therefore yours to raise in an appropriate and respectable manner. You knew of this deception and yet you said naught. You have raised a slut. I should beat you for this.” He glared angrily at her.

She shook her head, “That will not solve the problem that has presented itself to us.” She took a breath as a sudden wave of nausea struck. “I have not myself seen her meet this man. I only know what the servants speak of. I have on one occasion found her out of bed late at night, but she had fainted in the chapel. She gave the excuse that she was praying fervently and was overcome.”
She tried not to smile as she said the next. “I at the time believed her, for she claimed to be praying for a husband. She felt you would not let her marry for fear of missing her since Maryanne has already left us.”
She waited for this to sink in and tried hard not to laugh. Her husband was a fool and easily led. She only wished she had known about this sooner, her life thus far might have been more entertaining if not pleasant.

He sighed and the anger seemed to leave him. Sofia was indeed his favorite and he did not long to see her married off. “Tell me, who is this man that she meets?” Madeleine could not help but smile as she answered. “He is one who has not only your respect, but your land. Lord Royson, the Kings’ vassal. I believe this ‘affair’ started after the kings wedding. I saw the two of them having words there and I wondered. I of course made no mention of it to you. I am after all a silly woman and full of flights of fancy…” He growled and covered his ears. “Nay, do not speak to me of your weaknesses. We both know you are not a simpering maid, why else would I have to beat you regularly.” He frowned and she shrunk back thinking he meant to strike her. Snorting in derision he turned to leave telling her as he went. “I must think things over, in the meantime keep a better eye on your little whore.” He slammed the door as he left and Madeleine rushed to the water closet to relieve her stomach of the evening meal.

The next morning Sofia awoke to the sounds of preparations being made. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and wondered at the early morning rush but figured her father must be going away again. She smiled, that would suit her just fine. She hadn’t been feeling herself lately and with her father gone she wouldn’t be required to be in constant attendance. She would rather stay in her room in any case. Ringing a bell beside the door she called for her maid to come and bring her breakfast. However, she was surprised when her mother came instead. “Your father wishes to speak with you. Dress yourself, he will be here shortly.” Sofia was quite surprised by this. Her father never came to see her in her chambers. He usually called her to his study. She bit her lip nervously and dressed hurriedly having to pause only once to fight the wave of nausea caused by the butterflies struggling to get out of her belly.

She looked wary as he came in the door and stood before her. His face looked older then she remember, lines crossed under his eyes and there was a scar she had never noticed before, on the side of his neck. She briefly wondered if it was a scratch her mother had given him during one of his many attacks on her. Shaking the thought off she smiled brightly. “Hello father. Mother said you wanted to see me?” He only stared at her a long moment before responding.

It has come to my attention that you have been, for the better part of the summer, been having clandestine meetings with Lord Royson.” He waited as her mouth hung open in shock. Of his accusation or the fact that he knew of her indiscretion he could not tell. “Tell me, what is the purpose of your meetings?”
He waited for her response.

She could only look at him, the guilt written all over her face. He felt his temper rising and the urge to strike her made him curl his hands into fists. His favored child was no more then a whore. The disappointment he felt gave way to anger and he took a threatening step forward.
“You will answer me when I speak to you! What is the nature of your relationship? Do you intend to marry him?”
Sofia’s face paled and she shook her head. “He…he doesn’t want to marry me father. He…he doesn’t love me.”

She bit her lip feeling tears well up in her eyes. Lewen had ended their affair nearly two weeks ago but the pain was still fresh as if it had happened only yesterday. Now with her father’s accusations she felt the world was against her.
Her father glared angrily at her his eyes narrowing. “You mean to tell me he would dishonor you?”
She bit her lip and nodded. He harrumphed and tapped his chin. “You should not have gone to meet with him alone. He no doubt thinks you are of little moral character. Has he…defiled you?” His face flushed angrily and seeing the fearful look in her eyes he nodded, not needing an answer to his question.

He angrily shook his finger at her. “You should have known better. Your actions have bought shame to our family name.” His anger seemed a palpable thing and she didn’t know what to do to placate him having never been the cause for it beforehand. She knew he thought she was the victim in all this and she was afraid of what would happen if he discovered otherwise. She wished her mother were there.

“You’re actions have proven that you are too young and hotheaded to make your own decisions. You are no longer allowed to leave the castle and grounds without accompaniment by either you mother or myself or another chaperone we deem responsible enough to see to your welfare.”
He narrowed his eyes “This does not include servants as they have no authority over you.”
She only nodded meekly wondering if that was her only punishment,

“You’re mother has suggested that you may have compromised yourself. A doctor will be arriving shortly to examine you and see whether we have to take more drastic measures.” He sneered angrily.
She shook her head. “No, father please. I don’t need a doctor, I’m not with child I promise. Nothing happened we never….I mean…” She flushed in embarrassment.

Angrily he smacked her across the face and she gasped holding her hand to the reddened cheek.
“You dare to lie to me. You are nothing more then a whore and you are lucky that your mother pleads your case else you would be beaten and locked up to be married to the first old man with a title I could find!”
She tried hard not to cry, a grimace crossing her face. The threat of Maryanne’s fate was something she had feared but to hear it spoken out loud was sobering.

“You had best hope this Lord Royson has more honor then you claim he does. When he arrives we will get to the bottom of this and like it or not, you will be wed to him else I bring this matter before the King.” He looked at her thoughtfully. “Maybe he’ll see fit to give me my lands back.”
Her eyes widened at this and she screeched loudly her upset giving way to anger. “No, you cannot! I wont marry him. He…he is…I just wont!” the thought of marrying him had been on her mind towards the end of there relationship but with his sudden and obvious rejection of her it was the last thing she wanted now.

Her father watched as she ranted and cursed. He knew her anger matched his and he waited until she stopped blustering before continuing.
“You will marry Lord Royson, and I will get my lands back. This is just the bargaining chip I needed. At least your indiscretion will be of some benefit.”
She stamped her feet angrily and shouted “You would use me as a bargaining chip! What of my happiness? How can I marry him? He will surely hate me and…and…” she looked around wildly. This couldn’t be happening. She didn’t want this.
Didn’t she?

It didn’t matter whether she wanted it or not. It seemed her father would have his way in the end.
“If you do this to me. I swear I will hate you for the rest of my life!” She screeched childishly.
He only glared at her. He could care less if she hated him. In his eyes she was soiled and for that she would have to suffer the distasteful prospect of a loveless marriage.
“You should have thought of the consequences before you went so willingly to his bed. You will wed him and he will now pay for what you have before freely given.”

She crossed her arms and glared angrily at him. “ I wont go. I will not marry for anything less then love.”
He waved her refusal aside. “You have no more say in the matter. I only informed you of what is to come as a courtesy. You are lucky I offered you that even. Now begin to pack your things. As soon as the arrangements are finalized we will escort you to your new home.”

She watched as he departed the room then angrily she threw a pillow at the door. How dare he! She looked around at her room, a cold chill running down her spine. She felt confined. Trapped.

Suddenly she heard the sound of horses on the gravel drive. He was here. She rushed out of her room. She had to speak to him. To let him know she hadn’t betrayed him. That she was not to blame for him being forced to marry her. She had to make him understand before it was too late and he came to hate her.

Downstairs Lewen was feeling a bit peeved at the sudden turn of events. He was expecting a visit from the King and Queen soon and was busy making preparations when he’d received Lady Montague’s summons. Not wanting to snub them and feeling guilt over how he’d ended things with Sofia was what bought him there in the first place. He tried hard not to think about how he’d felt at the thought of possibly seeing her again. He would never admit, even to himself that he missed her. But that was before her father had stormed into the room and thrown accusations into his face. Now he felt only a burning anger towards her. She was, he felt a spiteful little witch and he would definitely be having words with her later. But now he had a bigger problem. Her father was threatening to inform the King of his indiscretions.

Lewen didn’t dare laugh at that. He knew Dimitri very well and though they’d been friends all there lives, he knew the man was honorable and would force him to do the right thing and marry the little tart. “Lord Montague, I’m sure you misunderstand. I am only slightly acquainted with your daughter. I assure you, I have made no untoward advances on her.”

Lewen was not entirely sure of what Sofia had told her parents but he suspected it was not much by the slightly confused expression on her fathers face. “You…she…Well.” Her father sputtered a bit and seemed to lose his train of thought. Lewen shook his head. How this man could have sired such a witty and charming girl as Sofia he would never understand. “Look, sir. I do not know what your daughter made known to you but we have only the most innocent of acquaintances. I helped her to return home after she had lost her shoe while out riding. We’ve only met a couple of times. He smiled benignly, while inwardly he seethed.” The lies came easily enough; he’d been in this predicament on more then one occasion. Still he did not like to be here and with the threat of telling the King hanging over his head he knew he had to think fast and talk faster.

“Sir, it has come to my attention. Your daughter happened to make mention that is while I attempted to rescue her tree from a muddy bog, that there are a number of acres gifted to me by the King that was once yours. I would be willing to let you have them, free of charge.” He smirked slightly seeing the flare of greed in the mans eyes.

“You would give up nearly forty acres of land, free of charge? At what benefit is this to you?” Lord Montague knew what game Lewen played but he waited to hear the offer. “Well sir, seeing as this has all been a misunderstanding, and as your daughters reputation may have been compromised as we were most likely seen walking unescorted, I would think this would be more then enough reparations.”

Lord Montague nearly laughed in delight but he held himself in check. He knew the man was guilty, why else would he offer to pay him off. He wanted nothing less then a marriage for his daughter now. He was sure of that now. Having the best friend of the King as a son in law would surely boost his reputation and standing at court. There was also the land. In truth it was more like twenty acres, but if he could get the man to give him that as well as taking his headstrong daughter to wife, then the reward would be much greater.

Lord Montague chuckled. “You make a good bargain my son.” He smiled softly emphasizing the word son. Lewen smiled in slight relief though a flicker of doubt crossed his countenance. Glancing behind the man he thought he saw a shadow moving quickly away from the door but he thought it could be a trick of the light. “So, we have an agreement then?” he asked, wanting to get this business over with and leave as soon as possible.

Lord Montague smiled but didn’t agree. Instead he gestured toward the door. “Shall we go into my study to finalize the arrangements? I am sure you would like to be on your way soon. After all, the King is coming as you said.” Lewen nodded warily and followed him into the study.

Lord Montague sat at his desk and rifled through some papers until he found what he was looking for. He glanced up at Lord Royson a smirk coming to his face. Standing he went to the man and read aloud from the papers.

Lord Roysons face at once became stony and he nodded curtly. Signing the documents handed to him he stiffly shook Lord Montague’s hand. “I will go make sure the horses are ready.”

Lord Montague watched as Lewen left the room. He could almost feel the anger and resentment coming off the man. He knew this was what was best for his daughter. His wife didn’t have to tell him that. But he also knew this would benefit him greatly and he relished the prospects laid out before him. Glancing down at the papers he smirked. The report from the doctor was of course a fake. The doctor hadn’t arrived in time but he need never know that. Lewen and Sofia’s guilt was written all over their faces. If she wasn’t with child now, she would be soon enough.
Sighing heavily he tucked the papers away in his desk. He did favor Sofia. She was so much like him that he often thought she was the son he’d never had. Marrying her off like this didn’t sit well with him. But then he smiled. He had forty acres of prime land coming to him, nearly double of what he’d originally lost, through his own fault in fact. To top it off Lewen had forfeit Sofia’s dowry. He was doubly happy with the outcome. Even if no one else was.

For Maryanne the days of summer seemed to creep by slowly. The life of a noble lady was one of leisure and since Lucy and now Millie had the household running so smoothly that left little for her to oversee. At least at her parent’s home she’d had her father’s guests to entertain. She was almost as accomplished a musician as her mother and they would have regular lessons. She smiled thinking of her mother. She missed her terribly. They had been keeping up a regular correspondence. But it wasn’t the same as seeing her regularly. She felt idle and knew her mother who had always seemed to have something to do to occupy her time would not approve. Her mother always had something productive for her daughters to do and they would often try to find ways to sneak out of doing some task there mother had set them to. For the most part she found herself sitting in the kitchen watching Millie work, as she had nothing better to do and she enjoyed the company. She offered help occasionally but of course the maid wouldn’t hear of it.

Back at her parent’s home she’d spent a lot of time on her private balcony painting. There was the occasional interruption by her sister, but for the most part she went undisturbed while there. She sighed wistfully. She missed her sister terribly. They hadn’t seen each other since the Royal Wedding. She lived too far to travel alone and Lord Donovan did not have time to travel with her to visit. So she was left to idle out the days on her own.

Another whom she missed but would never give voice to was Douglas. He’d been a small comfort to her while living in her father’s home. She would sneak away to see him occasionally and their days would be filled with conversations of art history and science, there nights filled with the soft touches and innocent kisses of youth.
She blushed hotly as she recalled there last few meetings. Things had not been so innocent then.

A soft knock on her door aroused her from her thoughts and she looked up. “Yes?”
Through the door came Millie’s muffled voice. “My lady, you have a visitor…”
There was a short paused before the maid continued her tone decidedly lower. “At the back gate mum. A young man…”
Maryanne’s eyes widened and she grinned jumping up from her seat she hurriedly went to the mirror pinching her cheeks and fluffing her hair. “I’ll be right there!” She called. Pulling the door open she grinned into Millies’ astonished face before going toward the stairs. She asked in a low tone as she passed the maid, “Is my husband home?”
At the woman’s answering nod she bit her lip and frowned pausing with her foot on the top step.
Seeing her hesitation she continued, her voice just as low. “He is in his chambers my lady, resting.”
Maryanne nodded and casting a cautious glance in that direction she headed down the stairs, Millie close on her heels.

“Millie, I am going to…visit with my friend in the drawing room. I do not wish to be disturbed, but let me know if my husband awakens.” She told the woman as they headed down the hall toward the kitchen. Not waiting for the maids reply she rushed out the side door into the back garden where she spied a young man standing with his back to her. “Douglas..?” she asked softly and her heart skipped a beat as he turned, the familiar grin coming to his lips. “My muse.” He said and she flushed bright red. She stood several paces away from him and he her. They only stared at each other for long moments. The last time they’d been together they had barely spoken and the heat she could feel in her face attested to what they did instead.

Stepping closer Douglas gently caressed her face. “I have missed you terribly.”
Her eyes watered slightly. She had known she would never be with him. She had hoped of course and dreamed as any young woman fancying herself in love would. But she knew ultimately that her life was arranged for her. Still she felt a yearning for him and though she took vows before God and witnesses, she couldn’t for the life of her resist.
“Oh Douglas, I have missed you as well.” She cried throwing her arms around him in tight hug her face pressed against his neck. He held her for a while there then pulled back his eyes searching hers. “ I have thought becoming a lady would make you forget me…” His look was one of amusement but she saw, behind it the fear of rejection was real.
“Oh Douglas,” she whispered shaking her head softly as she gazed into his eyes. “I could never forget you. I love you.”

Unable to resist any longer they embraced tightly, his lips capturing hers passionately. They stood there in the garden, their arms wrapped around each other their lips and bodies pressed close. Millie nervously watched from the window, giving occasional glances toward the door as if she feared the Lord would walk through at any moment. She waited a few moments more at the window then discretely tapped the glass and stepped away.

Pulling from his arms Maryanne grasped his hand and pulled him to the kitchen door. “Come, I have arranged for us to visit together for a while.” She hurried him through the hall and into the drawing room. There were no doors to lock but she knew Millie would stand in the hall and notify her if they would be interrupted. Turning to him she gently caressed his face. “You are growing a beard.” She smiled. “I like it. It’s very manly.” He chuckled at her words and gave her a hot look. “I have many reasons to be one. Though for the moment I am glad that you see it and like it.” She blushed hotly at his words.

He chuckled softly seeing her heated face and pulling her to him, kissed her with much fervor. Her hands caressed his back and he hers. The long months away from each other seemed to melt away as they felt the loving comfort of each others arms again.

There clothing seemed to melt off and with a nervous Millie standing in the hall twisting her hands in despair, they once again consummated their love for each other.

Maryanne watched from the window as Douglas made his way down the path to the horse he had hidden down the road in the trees. She felt a heavy ache in her heart at his departure but at the same time a budding excitement began in the pit of her belly. Her husband could never find out about this. She left the room to Millie’s care and cleaning. Sudden inspiration had struck and she felt the need to put brush to canvas.

Humming softly, she swished the paintbrush artfully across the canvas. She thought perhaps she would paint the lake in the spring, the beautiful pink and yellow flowers blooming, the trees a gorgeous green shining in the sparkling sunlight. She grinned at the picture in her mind. Hearing Millie call to her she put down her palette and brush and wiped her smudged hands on a nearby cloth. Taking one last glance at her artwork she left to attend the evening meal.

Maryanne’s mind wandered through much of the meal. She barely said to words to her husband who, for the most part didn’t mind. He wondered of course at her dreamy expression and flushed cheeks. She seemed happier then he could ever remember her being and he found himself smiling a lot while he watched her.
“Maryanne, I know you haven’t been to see your family in some time.” He paused for a minute before continuing as she looked at him curiously. “ I have some business to attend to that will keep me away for a fortnight. But upon my return, we could perhaps pay a visit to your family.”

Maryanne grinned excitedly at that. “Oh yes, my lord. I would love to visit with my family. I shall write to mother at once.” She stood up but then a frown creased her forehead and she sat back down. “But, my lord. Where do you go?” she asked. He had gone away on business before but only for a few days. Two weeks was a long time.

He smiled and shrugged going back to his meal. “I have business in Wallingford. No worries. I will be back soon enough. I am sure you can keep occupied while I’m gone.” He winked at her and she blushed, ducking her head down to gaze at her plate. The worry that perhaps he knew of her indiscretions flashed across her mind and her appetite fled at the thought. But, if he did know. He would not leave her alone. He still trusted her. Feeling slightly relieved at that thought she was able to finish her meal in relative ease.

That night in her chambers she sat before her vanity mirror gazing at her reflection. She saw many changes since her marriage to Lord Donovan. Her face wasn’t as pale and the dark shadows beneath her eyes were gone. She no longer felt the constant worry that had plagued her while in her father’s house. She still worried about her mother and sister but now it was a distant worry. She felt her mother had changed with her marriage and she knew she would be able to take care of herself. She grinned at her reflection. She longed to see her sister and could hardly wait until Lord Donovan returned from his trip. A spark glinted in her eye and she jumped up, giggling excitedly. With him gone for a time she could see Douglas as often as she wished. The thought made her giddy and she was still smiling as she readied for bed. In just two days time he would leave for his trip and she would be free in a way she never had been before. Free to be happy and in love, at least for a time.

The last days of fall dragged by slowly. A new nip in the air encouraged people to add another layer before going out. Lord Montague, bored of the company of his wife and daughter, was often out, leaving the two of them alone at the castle for hours, sometimes overnight. Sofia barely noticed her father’s absence as she was so caught up in her own somewhat illicit affairs. She was often out for hours and once didn’t come home until the wee hours of the morning. Lady Montague on the other hand noticed his absence and was quite relieved by it. She often found herself dining alone and though she missed her daughters company, it felt good to have some time to herself. Also she had missed her courses two months in a row and she knew without a doubt she was once again with child. She of course feared for her life and the life of her child and prayed her husband would stay his hand so that she may have a chance to deliver a healthy son. For the most part she kept quite about the news, not wanting to draw any undue attention to herself.

Her silence was rewarded by her husbands continued indifference. He would wake early, have breakfast then depart to handle some mysterious business. Lady Montague suspected he was paying regular visits to the new tavern or specifically the women of leisure who resided above it. She of course felt no jealousy, only mild irritation and disgust. She prayed he stayed away, she was afraid she would catch something should he venture to her bed again.

With nothing to do in her husband’s absence, Lady Montague took up a hobby. She ventured into the kitchens one day and befriended the new cook who was happy to regal her with stories of the many households she served. Lady Montague was sure the woman was a teller of tales as she couldn’t be much older then she herself was and the experiences would have to have been had since birth. Still she had nothing else to do but listen. She also found herself assisting the woman in the preparation of the meals. It was hard work but she found some delight in it and thought she would like to cook more often.

Her other past time of late is somewhat more secretive then the first. Having received no satisfactory answer to her question on the morning she confronted her daughter, she has made it her mission to discover what secrets she is hiding.
With so much time on her hands she would have thought it quite easy, but Sofia could be very sneaky when it warranted and so Lady Montague was having no luck in that department. Until, Sofia slipped up.

The summer was meant for romance, Sofia thought as she filled Shakespeare’s food dish. She smiled as she watched the parrot crack a seed open and scoop out the treat with its dark tongue. She sighed softly and went to gaze out of the window. She didn’t know when it had happened, but she felt she may be a little bit in love. She knew her mother would not approve of her actions. She would in fact, be downright horrified. The thought made her giggle. Her mother didn’t often get angry and so the picture was amusing to her, but then came the nasty thought of her father’s wrath. She was his favored child she knew. But if she should cause any scandal, anything to mire their longstanding family name, she felt he would beat her to within an inch of her life. She frowned and bit her lip in nervousness. The thrill of being with Lewen was like a drug to her, but it would have it’s consequences should her parents find out. She would just have to make sure they never did. But how long could they continue to sneak around. Eventually she would have to marry and then what? Or perhaps Lewen would get tired of her. A soft knot formed in her belly at the thought.

She continued to gaze out the window, at first seeing nothing but dark shadows. It was so very late. Would he come tonight? Normally she would go to his estate, but her father was home tonight and she felt it prudent to stay in. He and her mother had retired an hour ago though and now she waited to see if her lover would come. She watched for an hour and just when she thought he would not come, she saw a dark shadow moving up the walk. She grinned and ran into the hall only to stop short as one of the servants answered the light tap upon the door. She gasped softly and slipped into the prayer room, a room used most often by her mother when she could not make it to church when she was ill, which lately had been often. It smelled of fresh lye and human sick, as if someone had been ill and the servants had cleaned up. She smirked as she thought this. Perhaps her mother was with child again. She filed that information away for future reference. The door shut and she peered out to see the servant going back to the kitchen. He of course hadn’t seen anyone on the other side of the door. It was there code. He would knock then she would knock back to let him know it was her. When the servant opened the door without knocking he had hidden in the bushes. She stifled a giggle at the thought.
Making sure the way was clear she ran into the hall and knocked softly on the door. At his answering knock she pulled it open a crack and he slipped quietly inside. Taking his hand she pulled him into the prayer room, not seeing the servant watching from the shadows of the back hall.

She threw her arms around him and kissed him, her body pressing familiarly against his. “I was worried you wouldn’t come.” She said her eyes searching his. She frowned when he looked away. Taking a step back she watched him as he looked around the room. “What is it? What’s wrong?” she asked.
He took a deep breath and finally looked at her. “I think it time we end this affair.”
She looked at him her eyes confused. “W…why? Is something wrong? D…did you find someone else…?” she felt her stomach clench and she pressed a hand to it.

He sighed. He’d known this was going to be hard. He’d known for some time now that her feelings for him had deepened. He should have ended it then, he was not new to this. But she was. He’d known it a mistake to start anything. And now he had the shadow of her father’s wrath hanging over his head should she he find out. He looked at her closely; she looked stunned, her big innocent eyes shimmering with tears. He felt his heart ache and he frowned. Since when did his heart get involved.

He gently caressed her face and watched as her eyes closed and she moved into his touch. Yes he definitely had to break it off, for both their sakes. “You are so beautiful.” He said and she opened her eyes to look at him. “You deserve better.” He pulled his hand away but she caught it in both hers, holding it tightly. “Why now? Why did you not say, we should stop seeing each other weeks ago. Or even last night?” her questions were valid and he struggled for a moment before answering.
“How could I say no to you. You come to me, so sweet and soft. You kiss me and make me want you.” He smiled wistfully. “You make me want what I cannot have and what I do not deserve. You will wed some rich well to do lord, have his babies…and forget about me.” His jaw tightened and he again tried to pull his hand from her but she resisted. She knew he said he would never wed, but perhaps his feelings had changed. “You…you could marry me. I could have your babies. I would never forget about you.” She looked at him her eyes filled with an emotion she was yet afraid to give voice to.
He laughed.

She watched the amusement dance across his face in stunned silence finally allowing his hand to slip from hers.
He shook his head his mirth dying down. “I am not the marrying kind. I told you this from the start.” He watched as the realization that their affair was over hit her. She took a shaky step back and nodded, her eyes lowered. “Yes, you did say that. I only thought that perhaps…” she shook her head letting her words die out. She felt a sudden wave of nausea and she pressed a hand to her belly and turned away. “Perhaps you should go now. Before anyone sees you.” She said her voice low.
“Sofia I…” he began but she put up a hand to stop him. “Don’t, I have no regrets. I do not like to think that you do.” He nodded and bowing slightly he exited the room. She could hear the gentle closing of the door as he left the castle but she stood there, not wanting to witness his departure.

She stood there for a long while, her body still but her thoughts racing. She knew for a certainty that she was in love with him and now to know they would never be together, whether married or no made her feel lost and alone. She bit her lips trying not to cry out and she took a shaky step toward the door. The world spun and she paused, gasping softly. “Who turned down the lights…? she whispered softly before she fainted.
The resulting crash alerted the staff who were still up knowing the last member of the family was awake and awaiting her retirement for the evening. John reached her first and whispered hurriedly over his shoulder to the others. “It’s alright, it was only a candle holder that fell.” He blocked their view into the room and told them to turn in for the night. He waited until the last of them had departed before sprinting up the stairs to wake the Lady. She would want to be the first and perhaps only one to know.

He was of course right in his assumptions. She had set him to watching Sofia for the last few days and now he knew her secret. Lady Montague worriedly gazed at her daughter. John had made sure she was alright before coming to get her but she still looked to make sure she was alright. Except for a slight headache from here her head hit the hard stone floor she should be fine. She had John carry her up to her room and she looked around the small chapel while he did her bidding. There was nothing out of the ordinary to be found and she frowned in confusion wondering why her daughter would pass out so suddenly with no explanation. She sat and pondered this. The mystery surrounding her daughter seemed impenetrable to her.

She stood pacing back and forth her thoughts racing. She didn’t hear the door open or see John slip in and sit watching her. Turning she gave a startled gasp at his presence. “John, I didn’t hear you come in. How is Sofia.” She asked her worry evident.
“She is as good as to be expected my Lady. She will have a sore head come the morning I reckon.” He shrugged, looking down. Noting his disquiet she went and sat beside him. “This night has been eventful for you I take it.” She said.

He shrugged again, not looking at her. She smiled and shook her head. “John, you have something on your mind. What is it?” She watched, as he seemed to gather his thoughts. “The task you set me about my Lady?” he asked finally looking at her. She nodded indicating that he should continue. “Well, certain things have come to light and I feel I should, as per our agreement, inform you of the details.” Her eyes widened but she remained quiet waiting.

“I heard a soft scratching upon the door, and thinking perhaps it was a beggar come to plead I went to shoo them away. Upon opening it however; I found nothing there but air. So I of course locked up and left. But again I heard a tapping. I went to investigate but the Lady Sofia was at the portal letting someone in.” He took a breath and shrugged again, a habit it seemed he had when nervous. “I do not like to spy my Lady but knowing you had asked this task of me and seeing that this might be of some importance to you I hastened to the chamber door to listen.”

“I spied, I did, through the crack where door doesn’t quite reach wall.” He rubbed a hand across his nose and shrugged again. “Forgive me mum but I seen the Lady Sofia in an embrace with the Lord to whom you gave great hospitality to not this summers past.” Lady Montague frowned trying to understand all that he had said. “You mean to say, you saw Sofia with a man?” She looked slightly bewildered at his nod.

She’d had an inkling that it was something of this nature, but that she would be so brazen as to go beneath there own noses. Turning to the servant she asked, her voice low her expression serious. “And the lord you saw, he is someone who was here recently?”
“Aye mum, it was the one who come after the Royal wedding. The laughing one.”
His eyes were certain and she knew for a fact that he was being honest and true with her.

Nodding she smiled slightly and patted his hand. ”You’ve done quite well John. I hope I don’t need to ask you to please keep this information to yourself. It is imperative that no one know about this.” John nodded and shrugged again. “Of course mum, I will keep this to myself.”
“Good,” she patted his hand again. “You are dismissed, you may retire for the evening.” She waited until he had left and closed the door behind her before moving.

She got to her knees and prayed fervently for a long while. She had hoped something like this would never happen. She’d known Sofia was headstrong and passionate. But to ruin herself? What good could come of this? She prayed for guidance. When almost an hour had passed she stood and stretched tiredly. She worried about her daughter, more now then ever. And if she were to get with child. Why, the scandal! Her husband would be furious. And of course he’d take his anger out on her. Telling her she should have kept a closer watch on their daughter. She sighed tiredly and left the chapel making her way up the stairs to her chamber. She could hear the loud snores of her husband and was relieved he was still asleep.

Pausing outside the door she decided to check on Sofia. She entered the room quietly and stood over her daughter for a long moment, gazing down on her sleeping countenance. Her hair spilled over the pillow like a great black waterfall and Lady Montague could see dark circles beginning to form under her eyes. She didn’t like to think of her daughter in a negative light but knowing she may be the cause of more discontent within there small family made her feel slight resentment toward the sleeping beauty. She watched her daughter and noted that her face was flushed and she muttered something low in her sleep.

Madeleine leaned forward to better hear her and her eyes widened as she heard her daughter whisper the name of her lover. She was even now dreaming of him, the slut! The thought came unbidden to her mind and she quickly pushed it away. It seemed her daughters would do anything to escape the reality of there life here. Her thoughts briefly traveled to Maryanne and she wondered if she’d done her a disservice by marrying her off to Lord Vagel. She had known, though she of course made no mention of it, that Maryanne had fancied the merchants son. If circumstances were different, she might have begged a marriage between them. But she knew without a doubt her husband would refuse and most likely beat her for even suggesting it. She’d done what she had to get her daughter away from the monster that had sired her. Her thoughts were interrupted when Sofia gave a low moaned and turned in her sleep, again whispering Lewens name. Madeleine sighed and smoothed her daughter’s brow, gently tucking her in. This only confirmed what the servant had said. Sofia was indeed having an affair with Lord Royson. This had to be stopped, if it was too late…

Lady Montague shook her head. She didn’t like to think what would happen if it were too late. But all the evidence seemed to show that it might be. Why would her daughter have passed out in the chapel so unexpectedly? She would have to question the staff, namely the chambermaid. She had to know for certain before going any further. She brushed a hand across her still flat belly. Her husband would know soon enough of her condition. She prayed she didn’t have to inform him that there daughter was in the same state. Perhaps some good would come of this she thought. Perhaps….another marriage. She stood for a few long moments more. Watching her daughter to insure she was alright before heading back to her bedchamber. Something had to be done, and quickly. And whether she liked it or not. Her husband would eventually have to be informed.

Lord Royson accompanied the Montague family to their estate though in truth it was a distance past his own newly acquired manor and lands.
Throughout the ride there, Sofia kept casting inquisitive glances in his direction.
Neither of her parents had deemed it necessary to inform her of his visit and she could only speculate at his presence.

Lewen thought of the quiet family in slight amusement. Briefly he wondered if it was any less or more solemn with the eldest Maryanne present but shook his head thinking it would most likely be the same.

He watched Lord Montague shovel his food into his mouth, a smile quirking his lips as he noted the bits of food flying off his plate, some sticking to his thin beard.
Across the table he was surprised to see Sofia occasionally watching him. Quite suddenly she grinned, showing her even white teeth and winked at him before quickly looking back down at her plate.
He stifled a laugh, clearing his throat instead. A mistake he realized as everyone stopped and looked at him.
“Er…the meal is quite good, thank you for inviting me My Lady.” He said addressing Lady Montague. He pointedly ignored the derisive snort from her husband who abruptly pushed his chair from the table.
“Well, enough of this slop you call food,” he muttered. “I am retiring to the drawing room. Would you care to join me Lord Royson, I just received a fine bottle of Scotch from Wallingford from an acquaintance of mine…”
Lewen nodded, “Of course.”
Lord Montague turned and left not bothering to see if Lewen followed.

Lady Montague sighed audibly and sank into her chair, her hand caressing her forehead.
“Mother, are you alright?” Sofia immediately went to her, resting her hand on her shoulder.
Lady Montague sighed and looked up at her eldest daughter a wan smile coming to her face. “I am alright dear. Please accompany Lord Royson to the drawing room, it is best not to keep your father waiting…” She waved away Lewens offer of help and instead stood herself and the approached the pair.

Smiling she directed her attention to Lewen.
“Lord Royson, I have it on good authority that you are a favored of the king. A childhood friend in fact.” Lady Montague decided not to mince word. She felt he was an honorable man that would appreciate truth and honesty from others.
Lewen nodded. Not knowing exactly where this line of questioning was going.
Madeleine glanced at the door as if to be sure her husband was not there and leaned closer.
“I wonder, do you think the King a nice man then? Will he treat my dear friend Alexia well?”

At this Lewen relaxed a bit, even smiled. “Oh yes milady. We grew up together, he and I. We are of the same morals and I think should he harm one hair on her head, Corinne would beat him to within an inch of his life. Grown and King or not.”
Lady Montague grinned her eyes studying him before she nodded. “You’ll do..”

She smiled at the two of them, her gaze lingered a long while on her daughters face before she exited the room, calling over her shoulder as she went. “Lord Royson, please don’t keep my husband waiting too long. He has a short temper.” She quietly closed the door behind her.

Sofia looked at Lewen and he grinned, grasping her hands in his, he gently caressed the smooth skin on the back.
“Well, I am not sure what your father mean to discuss with me but it can only be good things. Right?”, he quirked an inquisitive eye at her.
Shrugging she gazed at him her brow furrowed. “Perhaps he has heard of your excellent breeding skills and finally wishes to give me a present. I have wanted a hunting dog for ages.”
He grinned. “I would hope so. It would be good for business. After all, I am a poor struggling lord.”
She giggled at this for though the new king had granted him his own lands, manor house included, there was not much coin in his coffers.
He leaned forward and gave her a slight peck before departing the room.

She stood there alone for a few moments more lost in thought. She thought back to the first time she had seen him. She’d felt an instant attraction and she knew, somehow that he’d felt the same way. Of course being a noblewoman and he a former soldier she had snubbed him. The thought of them being together was unthinkable. What would her father say?

One day they happened to meet by chance while she was out riding. She’d lost her shoe and he’d assisted her home. They’d sat near the lake beside her manor and gotten to know one another. She’d discovered that he was a close friend with Lord Blaise, the soon to be king and the Lord had gifted him with lands and a manor house bordering her family’s land.
She raised a brow at that. She knew her father had lost those lands years ago and had hoped to have them returned to him. She wondered what he would say to that.
She knew Lewen didn’t wish to marry. He was enjoying his bachelorhood too much, and now that he was a titled Lord his fun was only beginning. Who would want to be tied down with a wife?
At that thought her brow furrowed and she felt a bit queasy. Who indeed…

Now though, seeing her sisters arranged marriage she shuddered at the thought that she would too end up with a man old enough to be her grandfather. She of course knew she had no say in who she was wed too but she hoped her mother would not arrange it. The woman loved her daughters and only sought to shove them out of there fathers house as soon as possible, not caring what condition the suitor was in, only that he was kind and wouldn’t beat them.

Sofia snorted derisively. She felt she would take a beating or two rather then be pawed by some old man or live in a hovel with some pauper. Though Lewen wasn’t exactly leaden down with gold she thought him a far better match then the old lord Maryanne was married to.

Sighing she left the dining hall and headed for the drawing room where her family and Lewen were gathered.
Entering the drawing room she stood watching her parents for a moment. She also did not fancy a marriage like her parents. She knew her father was cruel. He’d never hurt her, or her sister that she knew of. But her mother had lost two babies and was constantly looking bruised up.
She frowned and exited the room, deciding she did not want company after all she went up the stairs to her own room. She needed to think about some things. She was determined her life would not mirror her sisters.

**********

The shoe incident, as Sofia liked to think of it, was the beginning of their affair. Her father had been occupied with his usual scheme of finding a husband for his daughters. His wife who was determined to see them married to “good” men rather then rich or influential ones however; constantly hampered him.
She smiled to herself thinking of her mother. She was different somehow. Sofia couldn’t put her finger on it but she supposed she liked the way she was now. She wasn’t as intimidated by their father anymore. In a way she seemed to not care anymore. Sofia frowned not sure if that was a good thing or not.

Standing she went to her mirror and smoothed her hair. Ever since the Cromey sisters had left, she’d been hard pressed to find a maid to do her hair properly. Her mother had been doing it lately and though she knew her mother thought it a wonderful bonding experience, Sofia still wished she could find some one with at least half the talent of Millie.

She stood admiring herself in the mirror for a long while. She knew she was attractive. She favored her father who, despite his many flaws and less then pleasing demeanor, was quite an attractive man. She grinned at her reflection. Her teeth were white with no stains or chips and her breath smelled sweet due to the mint leaf she chewed regularly.

Nodding at herself she thought it would not be terribly hard to find a husband.
‘Perhaps I’ll marry Lewen.’ She looked at her reflection, startled by the wayward thought. She knew Lewen was a confirmed bachelor. Sure, they had a bit of fun every once in a while but she was careful. She didn’t want to be forced to wed a penniless noble, Lord or not.

Giving herself one more look over she turned to remove a stray thread from the waist of her gown before leaving the room. She headed down to the library it had the best view. She could see the stables, the road, and more importantly the lake and small grove beyond. She was waiting for Lewen. He said he’d come by to see her today but didn’t want to run into her family. She didn’t mind. She didn’t want to be around her family either. Ever since Maryanne had married and moved out, she had been feeling ever more lonely. Her sister had always been good for a chat. Generally Maryanne spoke about art and science though around the time she left, she’d seemed to speak a lot about a boy. Sofia frowned trying to recall his name. He was a merchant boy who lived near town of that she was certain. Shrugging she glanced out the window again. He was late. She started to pace muttering softly to herself. She felt agitated and needed to burn off some excess energy.
“Who are you waiting for..?” Lady Montague’s voice froze Sofia in her tracks.
“Waiting…?” she asked glancing at her mother.
Madeleine nodded and crossed her arms, her eyes taking in her daughters seemingly polished appearance. “Yes, I heard you say you were getting tired of waiting.”
Sofia opened her mouth but no words came out.
She was caught…

Inside the chapel the low murmuring of voices could be heard sporadically echoing off the vaulted ceilings. Today was a day to be remembered, the crowning of a new King, and the beginning of a new kingdom.
Hearing the gentle tap on the door bought a sudden hushed silence and all turned to watch as the newlywed couple, soon to become New Cornwall’s King and Queen, walked ceremonially down the aisle for the second time in two days.

I present to you, in the name of our exalted One on high and His Son. Their royal highnesses the Lord and Lady Blaise. Our new reigning King and Queen of New Cornwall!!

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Dimitri felt a sense of relief now that the ceremony was over. He knew now his duties would be increased tenfold but just to have all the formalities done was refreshing. Now he could look forward to spending time with his new wife.
Deciding the staff could handle the dispersion of the guests themselves, the couple proceeded to sneak off to the empty great hall. Slipping in through a side door Dimitri grinned conspiratorially at his wife. The stairs were just there and they could sneak upstairs to their chamber if they so desired.

“I don’t feel so well…” Alexia’s words came softly and Dimitri turned in time to see his wife beginning to swoon.

He quickly rushed to her and scooped her up into his arms shouting for Lucy.

Swearing softly to himself he started toward a nearby settee. He’d known she wasn’t feeling well but had hoped it was only nerves. Now fear gripped him as he looked down into her very pale face.
He could hear Lucy’s hurried footsteps on the stairs behind him. “Hurry Lucy, Alexia is not well.” He heard her give a few quick orders to someone.
“Send for the doctor.” He said, throwing a glance over his shoulder. He again looked at his wife, noting the glassy look in her eyes.

“I don’t know how to be a Queen…” was Alexia’s last coherent thought as darkness overcame her.

Despite the festivities of the night before, the household was up and bustling about early the next morning.
Many people, noble and peasant alike had traveled far from their homes to attend the Royal crowning ceremony that was to take place today and the chapel was quickly filing up. Most came early so as to ensure a seat though of course seating went according to class with the lowest peasant in the back and nobles in front.

In another part of the manor, the master bedroom to be exact, Alexia sat nervously her hands twisted in her lap. Two important events taking place in her life one day apart seemed a bit much. She could feel her stomach squirm and she swallowed hard, thinking she wouldn’t be able to eat anything Lucy made for her today. Dimitri stood nearby occasionally casting worried looks at his wife.
She yawned suddenly and he smiled. She hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before.

Glancing at him she blushed, standing as he approached.
“Are you ready now love?” he asked his eyes twinkling.
She nodded though her face paled and she swayed on her feet. He frowned and felt her face, noting the increased temperature. “Are you alright?’ he asked concern creasing his brow.

Sighing she forced a smile and kissed him lightly. “Its just nerves, I am alright. It is not every day a woman becomes a wife and a queen at the same time.” She swallowed thickly as another wave of nausea washed over her.
Dimitri nodded though not quite reassured. “I will send Lucy up, stay here until you are feeling better, they’ve waited this long what is a few moments more.”
He left, closing the door behind him.
Alexia sighed and went to the mirror. She looked pale and so pinched her cheeks hoping to add some color. Though he’d told her to wait for Lucy she didn’t feel up to the maids fussing and just wanted to get things over and done with so she quickly left the room and headed to the chapel.

Dimitri stood outside the chapel wondering where all the servants were. He’d specifically told the butler Jon to have someone remove the dogs from in front of the chapel.
His thoughts were interrupted by the soft footsteps of his wife as she approached.

“You are feeling better?” he asked, taking her hands in his. He looked into her face, noting her increased color.
“Yes, I would have this done with alrea…” she paled suddenly.

Turning she fled back into the main hall, Dimitri on her heels. She entered the garderobe not even bothering to close the door as she ran fell upon the pot

He frowned as he heard the sound of her being sick.
Entering the garderobe he looked at her speculatively. No, of course not. It was entirely too soon.

He handed her a damp cloth and she thankfully wiped her face and hands, sighing deeply.
“I do not know what is wrong with me. I was not nearly as nervous yesterday.” She shook her head in confusion.

Caressing her face gently he watched her in concern. “I will send for a doctor after the ceremony.” He paused watching her face. “Do you feel up to going in now? They are waiting for us.”

At her nod he took her hand and led her back to the large double wooden doors of the chapel. Glancing at her he smiled seeing the determined look on her face. She would make a good queen.
He knocked gently on the door and the two servants placed inside opened the door to admit there soon to be King and Queen.

***********************************************************************************************************************************************************

Dimitri mock glared at a laughing Lewen as he tossed back another brandy at the bar.
The wedding reception was in full swing and it didn’t appear to be ending soon. His new bride had already departed the festivities to prepare for bed and though he wouldn’t admit it, especially to the constantly teasing Lewen, he was eager to be off as well.

He turned to get another drink but stopped, thinking better of it. He didn’t want to be too tipsy when went to his bride tonight. He couldn’t help but grin at the thought of her but it quickly left his face as Lewen let out another guffaw of laughter.

He turned away from the bar and Lewens grinning countenance and faced another obstacle in his path to his marriage bed.

“Lord Blaise,” Sofia Montague stood before him smiling sweetly.
“Lady Montague,” he said politely bowing over her outstretched hand.
He didn’t see the cold smirk she tossed behind him but a low growl from Lewen caused him to frown slightly.
“I just wanted to personally offer you my congratulations on both your marriage and your future crowning.” She fluttered her lashes and Dimitri smiled politely trying not to turn to look at Lewen as the man gave a loud snort.
Unable to ignore him any longer she glanced past Dimitri. “Mr. Royson, how nice to see you again.” By her tone both he and Dimitri could tell that it wasn’t nice indeed.

Lewen glared coldly at her a moment. “It’s Lord, Royson if you please.” He said, his glare becoming even more dangerous when she laughed.
“Lord…right.” She turned her attention back to Dimitri but before she could say anything Lewen stepped forward.
“So, lady Montague”, his tone implied she was anything but; he glanced around before continuing. “You seem to be on the prowl. I’m afraid though Lord Blaise is off the market. He’s only gained a wife, I doubt he is already in need of a mistress.”
Her cheeks flamed bright red and she leaned up to hiss angrily into his face, her words low enough so only the three of them heard, “Better a Kings whore then a paupers wife!” She glared angrily at him before turning on her heel and walking away.

Dimitri stared at his friend his eyes wide in shocked surprise. Lewen barely glanced at him, instead turning to the bar and retrieving another drink.
“Is theire something you aren’t telling me?” he asked his friend as he watched him toss back one brandy then another. When he reached for the third Dimitri put his hand out to stop him.

Lewen glared angrily at the hand restraining him but didn’t move. “No, just putting her in her place.” Turning he glanced around the room his eyes seeming to hone in on her petite form as she spoke with one of the new bishops.

Seeing the direction of his glare, Dimitri nudged him; “You might want to stop shredding her gown with your eyes then. Her mother is watching you.”
Lewen quickly turned away as said Lady approached.

“Lord Blaise,” Lady Montague smiled warmly her and extended her hand.
Dimitri accepted the offered digit and bowed low. “My Lady Montague, how are you?” He smiled back at her. He genuinely liked her, as did most people in New Cornwall. Though no one spoke of it, they all sympathized with her and secretly hated her husband.
“I am quite well thank you lord Milord. I wanted to congratulate you on your vows and impending kingship. Lady Donovan was a dear friend of mine. I know she would have been delighted to have you as a son.” She spoke to him though her eyes glanced behind him to the back of Lewen who was trying to look unobtrusive.

“Thank you for your well wishes my dear lady. I am glad you could attend.” He tried not to glance at Lewen as he said this.
Peering over his shoulder she lifted one golden eyebrow. “Lord Royson, How nice to see you again,” She addressed his back.

Lewen turned somewhat reluctantly and nodded slightly his drink held a lot. “My lady…”
She smiled sweetly though it did not reach her eyes. “Pardon me Lord Blaise but I wonder if I might have a word with Lord Royson?”
Lewen nodded curtly and Dimitri smiled and clapped him on the back.
“Well, I’ll let you two talk. I am going to see if I might sneak away from the festivities now.”

He walked toward the door trying hard not to listen to the somewhat whispered conversation behind him.

Lady Montague: “Lewen, may I call you Lewen? I wanted to first congratulate you on your Lordship….”

Dimitri waved a goodbye to Corinne who smiled and nodded deep in conversation with the priest. Confident that she and the competent staff could handle things he exited without further interference.

————————————————————————————–

Lucy sat in the master bedroom waiting for Alexia to arrive. This was a day she never thought she would see. The way the elder lady Donovan had clung to her only child, Lucy was sure she was headed for spinsterhood.

The door opened and Alexia entered looking quite radiant in her golden dress. Lucy rolled her eyes at the lateness of the hour but held her tongue as she noted the worried look on her wards face.

Smiling cheerfully, hoping to lighten her mood she stood and clucked her tongue at the time.
“Well there you are. I’ve been waiting for you. It’s time to get you ready for your husband now.”
Alexia giggled nervously and Lucy snorted in laughter, she herself had never been married but being the daughter of a lusty Irishman she well knew what went on between a man and woman on there wedding night.

She waved a hand to the vanity table indicating her to sit.
When she didn’t move Lucy peered into her face noting the look of nervousness creasing her brow.
“Now, now, don’t go worrying about what’s to come. If your anything like your mum you’ll…” she leaned forward to whisper something in Alexia’s ear.
Blushing Alexia stared at her companion and burst into giggles.Lucy gave her a quick hug before pulling her over to the vanity so she could remove her headpiece.

“Now,” she began her fingers deftly plucking out pins as she removed the veil and allowed Alexia’s dark locks to fall in tumbling waves around her shoulders. “what have your mum and uncle told you about what goes on between a man and a woman on there wedding night?”

Alexia’s face flushed as she stood and turned, Lucy tugging the ties to her gown open and removing it. Her heart beat a little faster in her chest.
“I swore this took ages to put on and yet so easily and quickly does it come off…” She gazed at herself in the mirror her eyes wide and slightly fearful.
Lucy placed the gown carefully in a trunk and turned to her young mistress.
“Don’t worry so. You’ll be fine. Just remember what I told you.”

They both burst into a fit of giggles just as the door opened and Dimitri walked in. Lucy gave Alexia another quick hug and nodded a curtsy to Dimitri as she slipped out the door, closing it firmly behind her.

At once Dimitri could see her nervousness and stepped forward, his hand reaching out to stroke her face. “You’re more beautiful every time I see you.” His words made her already warm face pinken and she held his hand in hers a moment before moving away to the bed.
She lay back against the headboard her eyes staring at her toes. She was still nervous but then Lucy’s words came to mind and she couldn’t help but grin.
Across the room she could hear the sounds of him disrobing and her grin faltered a bit. Her mother hadn’t gone into specifics with her. She hadn’t really wanted her to marry at all so had kept her relatively innocent. Her mothers many suitors had always left the manor happy though and if her Uncles thinly veiled displeasure was any indication of it, she knew what went on with them must have been more then the few kisses she’d had.

Dimitri’s sudden appearance beside the bed brought her out of her revelry. Climbing in the bed he scooped her into his arms and kissed her passionately, her arms wrapping around him as she returned his kiss.

Downstairs the reception had come to a close. The guests that lived nearby had departed for there homes and those who would be coming to tomorrows crowning ceremony and lived too far away were safely ensconced in the guests rooms.
The servants were finishing up the cleaning and had begun to relax as the household wound down.
Lucy poured drinks from the half empty bottles at the bar while Corrinne collected the left over pies and cakes, tossing out the half eaten ones and passing out the rest to the staff.
Though the night had ended they still had much to prepare for the morning’s ceremony, but that could wait for a bit. For now they relaxed and enjoyed each other’s company. They were all careful to stay away from a certain wing of the house and were sternly watched by Corinne who secretly hoped that a new arrival or two would soon be in the making.
